We’ve featured similar vehicles on the blog before but this one is particularly impressive. Daimler Motor’s truck manufacturer Freightliner just released it’s latest video outlining it’s plans for the Inspiration autonomous truck, and it is truly inspiring. Featuring a Highway Pilot System made up of camera and radar capabilities the truck allows the driver, (yes there is a driver but not in the conventional sense) to switch to HPS once on the highway. The camera and radar control distance from other vehicles and speed. The system can be deactivated at any time putting control of the vehicle completely back into the drivers hands. All overtaking manoeuvres are still managed by the driver. The video is quite beautiful to watch and fears of potential job losses seem unfounded as the truck needs a driver. It also offers the driver time to concentrate on other aspects of the job during long periods of potentially boring and sleep-inducing long hauls. When the time comes for the truck to pull off the highway and refuel, it’s just back to the driver with the controls and into the nearest Applegreen. Inspirational.
