As I was saying the run up to the New York marathon always leaves me breathless… with anticipation and excitement of course! Not that I am in any way a runner, more a stroller really. One dodgy knee and the gait of a penguin make me wholly unsuitable. A marathon for me will I’m sorry to say, always be a retro candy bar which I will of course try to finish as quickly as possible.
I have nothing but admiration for people who run over 41 kilometres, especially as an overwhelming amount of them are doing it for a favourite charity. Often in inclement conditions as was the case today when 15,000 runners took part in the SSE Airtricity Dublin marathon. Congratulations to Sean Hehir and Pauline Curley who took the national champions awards and of course to winner Alemu Gemechu from Ethiopia. Nataliya Lehonkova of the Ukraine was the first woman across the line.
In 2014 an incredible 99.2% of entrants officially finished the course in the city that never sleeps marathon.
This year over 50,000 people will take part and I know some of them will be Applegreenies. I will be keeping my eye on them and hoping the sun will be shining.
Take a break if you’re driving and go safely.
