As an Irish owned business, provenance is a key part of the Applegreen ethos. We believe provenance is equally important to our customers. Applegreen uses 100% Irish chicken in all of our own brand products. As far as we are aware, we are the only Irish retailer in a position to make this promise.
Our chicken is 100% chicken breast fillet meat and is produced in Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo and processed in Lisnaskea, Co. Fermanagh. The backbone of provenance is the system for tracking our products on a block chain (from source to end product). Our Irish chicken is traceable back to the egg, ensuring the food you eat is delivered fresh from farm to fork. Our supplier operates their own breeding farms, hatchery and work with a long established group of contracted farmers throughout Ireland to bring you chicken grown with care, to the welfare and quality standards of Bord Bia.
As the in-house Food Technologist here in Applegreen, I search the length and breadth of the country to source the finest food which we can deliver to our customers at an affordable price. I work with the countries best suppliers and with chefs to create delicious, custom products for Applegreen. Not all recipes make the cut, but the very special ones do. We are constantly improving our range with new product innovation that meets nutrition, health and well-being factors. This level of involvement allows me to carry out quality audits on the farm, the production and manufacturing facilities.

The average person doesn’t automatically think of food at a petrol station but people are buying food at convenience stores in increasing numbers. This is not only because of the convenience factor but also because of the food’s significantly improved quality and taste. Transparency is also one of the most important characteristics for customers when getting food on the go. We have noticed that customers are becoming increasingly proactive about selecting food and seeking more information about where the produce in the food they buy originates from. We have to exceed our customers’ expectations and show them that fast food does not have to mean bad food.
We offer a large variety of grab-and-go foods made with healthy and local ingredients, such as fresh and local vegetables, sustainable seafood, grass-fed beef, alongside other Irish staples such as Ballygowan and O’Donnell’s crisps. Our gluten free soups and dinners are full of natural ingredients and are lovingly prepared and handmade in Ireland. Our hot Irish breakfast is free from artificial colours, flavours, MSG, dairy and soya. Our award winning breakfast items are 100% Bord Bia quality approved.
As a company, we feel strongly that it is our responsibility to help shoppers make informed choices about buying Irish manufactured food and drinks both for wellbeing and to safeguard the future of food and drink manufacturing in Ireland.
